The Early Technology Validation team is active in the Euro Cloud project, evaluating the suitability of new ARM based server hardware and clusters for cloud computing purposes. ARM based servers infrastructure could provide large reductions in power consumption, at the cost of providing less processing power per CPU as compared to Intel based hardware. Our intent is to study and measure what kinds of applications benefit and what kind of applications to avoid when using ARM based solutions.
We are looking for a student to work in a master thesis project under Nokia expert guidance. The work includes and porting and adaptation of open source software to the ARM architecture, proof of concept application development and performance measurement and analysis of the applications and the middleware stack.
Requirements for the work:
Willingness and ability to make new things work in a early technology environment
Fluent working with linux distros
Application and Web application programming experience
Experience with web servers and Java, e.g. Apache and Tomcat
Good understanding of performance measurement and metrics tools for Linux
Statistical understanding is an advantage
Distributed programming (e.g. map reduce) is an advantage
The work is done in Nokia Ruoholahti offices and the salary will be according to the TEK guidelines.
